I Built a Scheduling App to Fix My Own Calendar. The Hard Part Wasn't the Code.

Discover how the creator of Schedulify turned a personal scheduling struggle into a market-fit solution, overcoming unexpected challenges along the way.

I Built a Scheduling App to Fix My Own Calendar. The Hard Part Wasn't the Code.

Have you ever thought about the specific failure of your productivity apps more than anything else? That's exactly what led to the creation of Schedulify, a tool designed to bridge the gap between intent and execution in scheduling.

The Problem with Productivity Apps

The common explanation for why productivity apps are abandoned is a lack of discipline. However, this overlooks the complexity of using these tools. Calendar apps require users to manually create events, estimate time, resolve conflicts, and maintain a separate system for tasks. This complexity is not a discipline issue but a design flaw that shifts the burden to the user.

The Birth of Schedulify

Schedulify was born out of a desire to convert human intent into protected time with minimal effort. The idea was to describe your day naturally, and the software would handle the rest. This approach ensures that intent is transformed into a protected schedule, with a human-in-the-loop to review and adjust as necessary.

The Hard Part Wasn't the Code

Initially, the focus was on building better AI and features. However, the real challenge was understanding the market and aligning the product with the needs of the target audience. Pricing at $3.99 and $9.99 a month for students was a mistake. The viable market was solo professionals who view the software as revenue infrastructure, not just a stress reducer.

Lessons Learned from Field Placement

Working at Overscore Media provided valuable insights. Building for real stakeholders with specific needs taught the importance of framing a landing page as an argument aimed at a specific audience. This perspective was crucial when repositioning Schedulify for professionals.

Where Schedulify Stands Today

Schedulify is live, technically sound, and positioned correctly. The current focus is on distribution and understanding the language and needs of the target audience through real-world usage.
